SA RIMS: Administration, Assistance or Annoyance

Carole Willis, University of the Witwatersrand

In order to gain better control over the research funds that are allocated to South African Higher Education institutions, the Department of Science and Technology decided to purchase a singular RIMS (research information management system). This system, which is largely funded by the Department, will be implemented and rolled out at all higher education institutions. The product that was selected was InfoEd, an American system in use throughout the English speaking world. This paper will deal with some of the background history to the project, the process that was adopted in selection and setup, some comments on how this is progressing and the current status of both the system and the project rollout.  Also to be covered are the challenges being faced both internally and externally in dealing with a project on such a large scale collaborative.  The paper will include a basic outline of the system modules and related functionality.  As the project is currently in setup phase, there are constantly changing developments and challenges that have to be faced by the partners.
