Networking Nuts and Bolts for Librarians or What Librarians should know about IT Techies.

Geoff Hoy, TENET

The Internet has been a wonderful boon to Librarians. But like many windfalls there are some disadvantages and these become manifest when things go wrong. In most cases Librarians are hindered by the fact that that they cannot explain what the problem is, they cannot fix the problem and they cannot find someone who can understand why it is a problem. This presentation will demystify  the elements of networking  in order  to be understood  or even to troubleshoot  problems  and provides simple tools to do so. It also looks at the differences between Librarians and IT Techies that might explain why communication is difficult and explains what Librarians need to know about IT Techies in order to press-gang them into their service.
